Key Topics to Revise

1

1. Understanding Decimal Fractions

  • A decimal fraction is a fraction whose denominator is 10 or a power of 10 (like 100, 1000, etc.).
  • Instead of writing the denominator, we use a decimal point to show the value.
  • For example: $\frac{7}{10} = 0.7$, $\frac{25}{100} = 0.25$
2

2. Like and Unlike Decimal Numbers

  • Like decimals have the same number of decimal places.
  • Unlike decimals have different numbers of decimal places.
  • Unlike decimals can be converted into like decimals by adding zeros at the end of the decimal part.
3

3. Converting Fractions to Decimals

  • If the denominator is 10, 100, 1000, etc., count the zeros and place the decimal point accordingly.
  • If the denominator is not a power of 10, multiply numerator and denominator by a suitable number to make it so.
  • Example: $\frac{3}{4} = \frac{3 \times 25}{4 \times 25} = \frac{75}{100} = 0.75$
4

4. Arithmetic Operations with Decimals

  • Always convert unlike decimals to like decimals before addition or subtraction.
  • Line up decimal points vertically during addition and subtraction.
  • In multiplication, total decimal places in answer = sum of decimal places in both numbers.
