Understanding Ratio
- A ratio compares two quantities of the same kind and in the same unit.
- Ratios are written as a:b or in fraction form a/b.
- The first term of a ratio is called the antecedent, and the second is the consequent.
Simplifying and Converting Ratios
- To simplify a ratio, divide both terms by their HCF.
- For mixed numbers or decimals, convert to improper fractions first.
- To compare ratios, convert them into fractions and simplify.
Proportion and Unitary Method
- Four numbers are in proportion if the ratio of the first two equals the ratio of the last two.
- In a proportion a:b = c:d, the product of means equals the product of extremes (b×c = a×d).
- The unitary method involves finding the value of one unit first, then multiplying to find the required value.
