Understanding Ratio

  • A ratio compares two quantities of the same kind and in the same unit.
  • Ratios are written as a:b or in fraction form a/b.
  • The first term of a ratio is called the antecedent, and the second is the consequent.

Simplifying and Converting Ratios

  • To simplify a ratio, divide both terms by their HCF.
  • For mixed numbers or decimals, convert to improper fractions first.
  • To compare ratios, convert them into fractions and simplify.

Proportion and Unitary Method

  • Four numbers are in proportion if the ratio of the first two equals the ratio of the last two.
  • In a proportion a:b = c:d, the product of means equals the product of extremes (b×c = a×d).
