Topics in Exponents
1. Basic Idea of Exponents
- In a power like 3^5, 3 is the base and 5 is the index or exponent.
- An exponent tells how many times the base is used as a repeated factor.
- The plural of index is indices.
2. Exponential Form of Numbers
- 625 = 5 × 5 × 5 × 5 = 5^4.
- 32 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 2^5.
- 729 = 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 3^6.
3. Laws of Exponents
- First Law: same base multiplication means add the exponents.
- Second Law: same base division means subtract the exponents.
- Third Law: power raised to another power means multiply the exponents.
4. Zero Index, Negative Index, and Roots
- Any non-zero base raised to power zero equals 1.
- a^0 = 1 if a ≠ 0.
- a^-m = 1/a^m and 1/a^-m = a^m when a ≠ 0.
