1. Line of Symmetry

  • A figure is symmetric about a line if that line divides it into two identical parts.
  • On folding the figure about the line, the two parts exactly coincide.
  • The line is called a line of symmetry or an axis of symmetry.

  • Reflection is like the image seen in a mirror.
  • For reflection in a line, the line acts like a mirror line.
  • The image point lies on the other side of the mirror line at the same distance.

3. Rotation and Rotational Symmetry

  • Rotation means turning a figure about a fixed point.
  • The fixed point is called the centre of rotation.
  • Whatever the angle of rotation, the resulting figure and the given figure are always same in shape and size.

  • Line segment → symmetrical about its perpendicular bisector.
  • Angle with equal arms → symmetrical about the bisector of the angle.
