1. The Judiciary: Meaning and Structure

  • The Constitution of India provides an independent, uniform and integrated judicial set-up in India.
  • The job of the Judiciary is to interpret laws and give punishment to law breakers.

2. The Supreme Court

  • The Supreme Court is the top judicial set-up of the country.
  • It consists of the Chief Justice and 33 other judges.
  • The number of judges is fixed by Parliament from time to time.

3. The High Courts

  • The Constitution provides for the establishment of High Courts in the states.
  • Parliament may establish a common High Court for two or more states.
  • A Union Territory may have a separate High Court of its own.

  • The Supreme Court and High Courts protect Fundamental Rights by issuing writs.
  • The five writs are Habeas Corpus, Prohibition, Certiorari, Mandamus and Quo Warranto.
  • Habeas Corpus is a great safeguard for personal freedom.
