What to Focus On
- Pollination = Transfer of pollen from anther to stigma
- Three modes: Autogamy (same flower), Geitonogamy (same plant), Allogamy (different plant of same species)
- Must occur between plants of the SAME species
- Self-pollination = pollen transferred to stigma of same flower or same plant
- Cleistogamy = self-pollination in flowers that never open (e.g., Pansy)
- Requires simultaneous maturation of anther and stigma
- Cross-pollination = pollen from one plant to stigma of another plant of same species
- Produces healthier, more vigorous offspring
- Enables creation of new plant varieties — basis of modern plant breeding
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Pollination and fertilization are the same process — both refer to how plants reproduce.
Double fertilization means the flower gets fertilized twice by two different pollen grains.
Self-pollination occurs only in flowers that are bisexual (have both stamens and carpels).
Memory Tips
Definition of Pollination
Three types of pollination — Autogamy, Geitonogamy, Allogamy
Advantages of Self-Pollination — 5 points
Disadvantages of Self-Pollination — weakens variety, no new varieties, defects retained
