Symbols, Formulas, and Molecules

A symbol represents one atom of an element

Chemical formula = symbols of elements with subscripts

Molecular formula of water = H2O

Molecular formula of ammonia = NH3

Molecular formula of sodium carbonate = Na2CO3

Valency and Radicals

Valency = combining capacity of an atom or radical

Valency from outer electrons: 1→1, 2→2, 3→3, 4→4, 5→3, 6→2, 7→1, 8→0

Variable valency naming: lower = ous, higher = ic

Writing Chemical Formulae

Criss-cross method

Formula of magnesium chloride = MgCl2

Formula of aluminium hydroxide = Al(OH)3

Formula of ammonium sulphate = (NH4)2SO4

Naming Compounds and Acids

Metal + non-metal: name metal first, add ide to non-metal

Two non-metals: use prefixes tri, tetra, penta, etc.

Oxo-salt naming: hypo- for less than 2 oxygen, ite for 2, ate for 3, per- for more than 3

Binary acids: hydro + second element + ic acid

Acids with polyatomic radicals do not use hydro
