Key Topics to Revise

1

Introduction to Volcanism

  • Volcanicity is the process involving intrusion of magma into the Earth's crust OR extrusion of molten material onto the Earth's surface.
  • A volcano is a vent or opening in the Earth's crust connected by a conduit to an underlying magma chamber.
  • Volcanoes eject molten lava, volcanic gases, steam, ash, cinder, and pumice.
2

Types of Volcanoes — Intrusive and Extrusive Forms

  • Volcanism is divided into two types: Intrusive and Extrusive.
  • INTRUSIVE forms: Lava solidifies WITHIN the Earth's crust into various shapes.
  • EXTRUSIVE forms: Lava solidifies AFTER coming OUT of the Earth's crust onto the surface.
3

Classification of Volcanoes — Active, Dormant, Extinct

  • Volcanoes are classified into three types based on their level of activity: Active, Dormant, and Extinct.
  • ACTIVE VOLCANOES: Constantly or frequently eject lava, gases, ash, cinder, and pumice.
  • There are about 1500 active volcanoes in the world; about 50 erupt every year.
4

Causes of Volcanism

  • Volcanic eruptions are closely associated with seafloor spreading, plate tectonics, and mountain building processes.
  • CAUSE 1 — Heat and Pressure: Temperature increases at 1°C per 32 metres of descent; caused by disintegration of radioactive elements deep within the Earth. At 15 km depth, pressure = ~5 tonnes per sq
  • This intense heat and pressure keeps rock in a molten or semi-molten state, creating magma.
