  • Stress is any physical or emotional state that causes bodily or mental tension.
  • Environmental stress is an undesirable transaction between the person and the environment.
  • Environment includes the physical world and socio-cultural surroundings.

2. Pollution and Its Major Types

  • Pollution is an undesirable change in the physical, chemical or biological characteristics of air, land and water that may harmfully affect life.
  • Pollutants are substances foreign to the medium in which they are present.
  • The major environmental stressors listed are air pollution, water pollution, noise pollution, crowding, and greenhouse effect.

3. Air Pollution

  • Air pollution is an imbalance in the quality of air causing adverse effects on living organisms.
  • The Bhopal Gas tragedy was caused by inhalation of methyl isocyanate gas.
  • Major air pollutants include CO2, NO2, SO2 and suspended particulates including lead.

4. Water Pollution

  • Water pollution is the addition of excess undesirable substances to water making it harmful to human, animal and aquatic life.
  • All surface water and much ground water in India is unfit for direct human consumption.
  • 10% of all diseases and 20% of communicable diseases in India are water-related.
