  • The issue of global repercussions of natural disasters was raised at the UN General Assembly in 1989 and formalised at Yokohama in May 1994.
  • The World Conference on Natural Disaster Reduction was held in Yokohama from May 23rd to 27th, 1994.
  • The conference declared 1990-2000 as the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction.

3. Earthquakes in India

  • Earthquakes are among the most unpredictable and destructive natural disasters.
  • Tectonic earthquakes are the most devastating because they affect a large area.
  • The Indian plate moves at 1 cm per year towards the north and northeast and is obstructed by the Eurasian plate.

4. Tsunamis

  • Tsunamis are caused by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions that suddenly move the sea floor and displace ocean water.
  • Tsunami waves are also called harbour waves or seismic sea waves.
  • In deep ocean water, tsunami impact is low because wave-height is limited.
