Key Topics to Revise
1. Meaning and Major Factors
- Natural vegetation is a plant community left undisturbed for a long time so that species adjust to climate and soil conditions.
- India has great variety in natural vegetation because climate and soil conditions change from region to region.
- Relief also matters: Himalayan heights support temperate vegetation, while plains, coasts, and deserts support different forest types.
2. Types of Indian Forests
- Indian forests are grouped into five main types: Tropical Evergreen and Semi Evergreen, Tropical Deciduous, Tropical Thorn, Montane, and Littoral and Swamp forests.
- The classification is based on predominant vegetation type and climatic conditions.
- Each forest type has a distinct rainfall range, habitat, and important species.
3. Tropical Evergreen and Semi Evergreen Forests
- These forests are found in the western slope of the Western Ghats, hills of the northeastern region, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
- They occur in warm and humid areas with annual precipitation of over 200 cm and mean annual temperature above 22°C.
- Tropical evergreen forests are well stratified and appear green throughout the year.
4. Tropical Deciduous Forests
- These are the most widespread forests in India and are also called monsoon forests.
- They spread over regions receiving rainfall between 70-200 cm.
- On the basis of water availability, they are divided into moist deciduous and dry deciduous forests.
