1. Water on Earth and the Hydrological Cycle
- Water is a cyclic resource and can be used and re-used.
- The hydrological cycle is the continuous movement of water on, in, and above the earth.
- It includes exchange among oceans, atmosphere, land surface, subsurface, and living organisms.
2. Relief of the Ocean Floor
- The ocean floor is not flat; it has major divisions and minor relief features.
- The ocean floors can be divided into four major divisions: Continental Shelf, Continental Slope, Deep Sea Plain, and Oceanic Deeps.
- Other relief features include ridges, hills, sea mounts, guyots, trenches, and canyons.
3. Continental Shelf, Slope, and Deep Sea Plain
- The continental shelf is the extended margin of the continent and is the shallowest part of the ocean floor.
- Its average gradient is 1° or even less.
- The average width of continental shelves is about 80 km.
4. Oceanic Deeps, Ridges, Seamounts, Canyons, Guyots, and Atolls
- Oceanic deeps or trenches are the deepest parts of the oceans.
- They are steep-sided and narrow basins.
- They are 3-5 km deeper than the surrounding ocean floor.
