- Drainage means the flow of water through well-defined channels.
- Drainage system means the network of these channels.
- Drainage pattern depends on geological time period, rock structure, topography, slope, amount of water, and the periodicity of flow.
Drainage patterns
- Dendritic pattern looks like the branches of a tree and is common in the northern plains.
- Radial pattern develops when rivers originate from a hill and flow in all directions.
- Trellis pattern appears when primary tributaries flow parallel and secondary tributaries join at right angles.
Himalayan drainage system
- The Himalayan drainage system includes the Ganga, Indus, and Brahmaputra river basins.
- These rivers are perennial because they are fed by snowmelt and rainfall.
- They form deep gorges, V-shaped valleys, braided channels, flood plains, ox-bow lakes, and deltas.
Indus system
- The Indus is the westernmost Himalayan river in India and is also called Sindhu.
- It originates from a glacier near Bokhar Chu in the Tibetan region at 4,164 m altitude.
- In Tibet, it is known as Singi Khamban, meaning Lion's mouth.
