- Public health nutrition is concerned with promotion of good health through prevention of nutrition-related illnesses and problems in the population.
- It includes government policies and programmes aimed at solving nutritional problems.
- It is a multidisciplinary field based on biological and social sciences.
2. Protein-Energy Malnutrition and Anthropometric Terms
- Protein-energy malnutrition is caused by inadequate intake of energy and protein.
- PEM is found in every society, including developed and industrialised countries, though it is more common in developing countries.
- Children are at greatest risk, but PEM can also occur in adults, especially the elderly, and in diseases like tuberculosis and AIDS.

- Micronutrient deficiency is also called hidden hunger.

- Iron-deficiency anaemia is the most common nutritional disorder in the world.
- It occurs when hemoglobin production is reduced, leading to low hemoglobin levels in blood.
- Vulnerable groups are women in child-bearing age, adolescent girls, pregnant women, and school-age children.
