1. India and its major geographical regions
- India is the seventh-largest country in the world and is part of Asia.
- India and its neighbours Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar form the Indian Subcontinent.
- For study, India is often divided into five major regions: the great mountain zone, the plains of the Ganga and the Indus, the desert region, the southern peninsula, and the islands.
2. The Himalayas and the northern region
- The Himalayas are India’s natural barrier in the north.
- The Himalayan range is about 2500 km long and stretches across six Asian countries: India, Nepal, Bhutan, China, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.
- Many peaks are over 8000 metres high and are called the Eight Thousanders.
3. The Gangetic Plains and major rivers
- The Gangetic Plains are vast and fertile plains south of the Himalayas.
- They are nourished by rivers from the Himalayas, especially the Ganga, Indus, and Brahmaputra river systems.
- These rivers enrich the soil with minerals, making the region highly fertile and suitable for agriculture.
4. The Thar Desert and the Aravalli Hills
- The Great Indian Desert is the Thar Desert.
- It spans Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab, and Haryana.
- Sand dunes in the Thar can rise as high as 150 metres.
