3. Cropping Seasons and Monsoons
- Indian agriculture is mainly divided into three cropping seasons: kharif, rabi, and zaid.
- The terms kharif, rabi, and zaid are of Arabic origin and have been in use since Mughal times.
- Before these terms, crops were called kedāra, haimana, and graishmika.
4. Soil and Soil Types
- Soil is the thin upper layer of the Earth's crust that supports plant life.
- Soil is formed over millions of years by weathering of rocks and decay of organic matter.
- Humus is dark organic matter in soil formed from decomposed plant and animal matter.
