Body Fluids and Types of Circulatory Systems
- Body fluid is distributed in two compartments: Extracellular Fluid (ECF) - 25% of body weight, high Na+ concentration; Intracellular Fluid (ICF) - 67% of body weight, high K+ concentration
- ECF includes interstitial fluid, blood plasma, lymph, and non-circulating fluids
- Open circulatory system: No capillaries, arteries open into blood sinuses (found in arthropods, molluscs)
Blood Composition and Properties
- Blood volume: 4.5-5.5L (women), 5-6L (men); pH 7.4 (slightly alkaline); specific gravity 1.05-1.06
- Bright red when oxygenated (arteries), dull red when deoxygenated (veins)
- Plasma (55%): 92% water, 8% solids including proteins (albumin, globulin, fibrinogen, prothrombin)
Red Blood Cells (RBCs/Erythrocytes)
- Biconcave discs, 8μm diameter, 2μm thickness; enucleated in mammals
- RBC count: 5 million/mm³ (males), 4.5 million/mm³ (females)
- Contains hemoglobin (15g/100ml blood) with iron-containing heme + globin protein
White Blood Cells (WBCs/Leukocytes)
