1. Circulatory system and body fluids

  • The circulatory system is needed because body cells are not directly in contact with the external environment.
  • Its main functions are transport of oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, hormones, and wastes.
  • It also helps in homeostasis, defence, and temperature regulation.

2. Blood and plasma

  • Blood is a fluid connective tissue.
  • Normal blood volume is 4.5 to 5.5 litres in a woman and 5 to 6 litres in a man.
  • Blood is slightly alkaline with pH 7.4.

3. Red blood cells and haemoglobin

  • Red blood cells are also called erythrocytes.
  • RBCs are biconcave discs.
  • They measure about 8 micrometres in diameter and 2 micrometres in thickness.

4. White blood cells and their types

  • White blood cells are also called leucocytes.
  • WBCs are nucleated, colourless, and mostly amoeboid.
  • They help in defence by phagocytosis and antibody production.
