Topics in Transpiration

1

Definition and Basic Concept

  • Transpiration is the loss of water vapours from aerial parts of a plant (leaves, stems, buds, flowers)
  • It is a physiological process carried out by living cells
  • Plants absorb huge quantities of water but retain only a small part for vital activities
2

Types of Transpiration

  • Three main types based on the structure through which water is lost
  • Stomatal transpiration accounts for 80-90% of total water loss
  • Cuticular transpiration varies from 3-9% among different plants
3

Stomatal Mechanism

  • Each stoma is surrounded by two kidney-shaped guard cells
  • Guard cells contain chloroplasts and can perform photosynthesis
  • Inner wall of guard cells is thick, outer wall is thin
4

Factors Affecting Transpiration

  • External factors: light, temperature, wind, humidity, water content of soil, CO₂ concentration, atmospheric pressure
  • Internal factors: leaf arrangement, cuticle thickness, number of stomata, anatomical features, root-shoot ratio
  • Light increases transpiration by opening stomata
