Meaning and Nature of Transpiration
- Transpiration is the loss of water vapours from aerial parts of a plant.
- It is a physiological process and is brought about by living cells.
- Leaves participate most actively in transpiration.
Experiments to Demonstrate Transpiration
- Bell jar method shows water droplets on the inner wall when a plant is kept inside a sealed bell jar in sunlight.
- The joint between the bell jar and plate is sealed with vaseline, and the pot is covered with polythene to prevent outside water interference.
- Polythene bag method shows water droplets on the underside of the bag when a leafy branch is enclosed in sunlight.
Measurement of Transpiration
- The rate of transpiration can be measured directly by loss of weight of a leafy shoot.
- Ganong's potometer measures the rate of transpiration by measuring the water taken up by a leafy shoot.
- In Ganong's potometer, the narrow bent end is dipped in coloured water and an air bubble is introduced.
