1. Sense Organs, Stimulus and Response
- Sense organs receive external or internal changes and are called receptors.
- A stimulus is a change in the environment or within the body which produces response.
- An effector is a body part whose activity leads to a response. It may be muscles or glands.
2. Structure of the Eye
- The eye is a hollow, spherical structure.
- About one-fifth of an eyeball is visible externally.
- Each eye is kept in a fixed position in its orbit by six muscles called ocular or eyeball muscles.
3. Photoreceptors and Image Formation
- Eyes are photoreceptors.
- Retina contains rods containing photosensitive pigment rhodopsin, also called visual purple.
- Rods enable vision in darkness.
4. Common Defects of Vision
- The eye is normal if parallel rays from an object at about 6 metres are focused on the retina.
- Myopia is a defect in which near objects are seen clearly but distant objects are not seen clearly.
- In myopia, the image of a distant object is formed in front of the retina.
