Kinds of Sentences

  • Declarative or assertive sentence states something.
  • Interrogative sentence asks a question.
  • Exclamatory sentence expresses strong or sudden emotion.

Assertive and Interrogative Sentences

  • To convert assertive to interrogative, add a negative if the sentence is affirmative, or remove the negative if the sentence is negative.
  • The meaning should remain the same.
  • Example of affirmative to interrogative: Suraj played with the neighbourhood children. → Did Suraj not play with the neighbourhood children?

Assertive and Exclamatory Sentences

  • To convert assertive to exclamatory, add words like indeed, truly, very, great, so, such.
  • For the reverse, remove the exclamation mark.
  • Example: My dress is beautiful. → What a beautiful dress!

  • An affirmative sentence states a fact positively.
  • A negative sentence states the same idea in a negative form.
  • Examples: Rama did not find the sum easy. → Rama found the sum difficult.
