Formulas

1. Biomolecules and Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates = polyhydroxy aldehydes or polyhydroxy ketones, or large polymeric molecules which on hydrolysis yield polyhydroxy aldehydes and polyhyd

General formula of carbohydrates: Cx(H2O)y

General formula of monosaccharides: (CH2O)n

General formula of polysaccharides: (C6H10O5)n

C12H22O11 + H2O --dil. H2SO4--> C6H12O6 + C6H12O6

2. Amino Acids, Proteins, and Enzymes

Neutral amino acids have one -NH2 group and one -COOH group

Acidic amino acids have two -COOH groups and one -NH2 group

Basic amino acids have two -NH2 groups and one -COOH group

Amino acids exist as zwitter ions in water

Amino acids at isoelectric point do not migrate in electric field

3. Hormones and Nucleic Acids

Hormones are chemical substances secreted by ductless glands that regulate development and activities of cells

Base + Sugar = Nucleoside

Base + Sugar + Phosphate = Nucleotide

A + G = C + T

DNA double helix has 10 nucleotide pairs per turn

4. Vitamins

Vitamins = organic compounds required in very small amounts for healthy growth and normal functioning of animal organisms
