Formulas

1. Basic Classification and Naming

General formula of haloalkanes: C_nH_(2n+1)X

Rate law of SN1: Rate ∝ [Substrate]

Rate law of SN2: Rate = k [substrate] [nucleophile]

2. Reactivity Trends and Bond Facts

C-X bond strength order: C-F > C-Cl > C-Br > C-I

Order of C-X bond dissociation energy: C-F > C-Cl > C-Br > C-I

Reactivity of haloalkanes: R-I > R-Br > R-Cl > R-F

Reactivity of halogens towards alkanes: F2 > Cl2 > Br2 > I2

Ease of H-substitution in alkanes: benzylic > allylic > 3° > 2° > 1° > vinylic > aryl

4. Nucleophilic Substitution and Elimination

Alcohol to haloalkane: R-OH + HX --(Dehydrating agent)--> R-X + H2O

Chlorination of methane: CH4 + Cl2 (sunlight/heat) -> CH3Cl + CH2Cl2 + CHCl3 + CCl4

Finkelstein reaction: R-Cl/R-Br + NaI (acetone or methanol) -> R-I + NaCl/NaBr

Swarts reaction: 3CCl4 + 2SbF3 --SbCl5--> 3CCl2F2 + 2SbCl3

Hunsdiecker reaction: RCOOAg + Br2 -> RBr + CO2 + AgBr

4. Nucleophilic Substitution and Elimination

SN1 rate law: Rate ∝ [Substrate]

SN2 rate law: Rate = k [substrate] [nucleophile]
