Key Topics to Revise
1. Basic Classification of Fisheries
- Fish catch in India is of two types: marine fisheries and inland fisheries.
- Marine or sea fisheries include coastal, offshore, and deep sea fishing on the continental shelf up to a depth of 200 metres.
- Inland or fresh water fisheries come from rivers, lakes, canals, reservoirs, ponds, tanks, estuaries, delta channels, back-waters, lagoons, and coastal lakes.
2. Fish Production in India
- India produces about 7 per cent of the world’s fish and ranks second among fish-producing nations.
- Fishing provides employment to over 14.5 million people.
- Fish production increased from 752 thousand tonnes in 1950-51 to 16.26 million tonnes in 2021-22.
3. Marine Fisheries in India
- India has a coastline of over 7,517 km, including Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep Islands.
- The continental shelf spreads over 3,11,680 sq. km. and is suitable for marine fisheries.
- About 75 per cent of marine fish landings are on the West coast and only 25 per cent on the East coast.
4. Reasons for Low Marine Catch
- India has a tropical climate, so fish cannot be preserved for long without refrigeration or deep freezing.
- The Indian coast lacks many gulfs, bays, estuaries, and backwaters compared with countries like Norway.
- Marine fishing in India is seasonal because monsoon winds and tropical cyclones often disrupt operations.
