Key Topics to Revise

1

Meaning and Basic Idea

  • Remote sensing means collecting information from a distance without direct contact.
  • Human senses also work as simple remote sensors: eyes, ears, and skin.
  • Eyes respond to light between 4,000 and 7,000 angstroms.
2

Basic Classes and Types of Sensors

  • Four basic classes of remote sensors are radiometer, audiometer, magnetometer, and gravimeter.
  • Radiometer measures energy level of portions of the electromagnetic spectrum and is the most important tool of remote sensing for geographical purposes.
  • Audiometer measures intensities of sound waves; it can help map ocean floor configuration through microphone-based sensing.
3

Electromagnetic Spectrum and Windows

  • Gamma rays lie at the extreme left of the electromagnetic spectrum and have the highest frequency and shortest wavelength.
  • Hard X-rays range from 0.03 to about 0.6 angstroms.
  • Soft X-rays range from 0.6 to nearly 100 angstroms.
4

Sensors and Imaging Instruments

  • Multispectral or multiband camera takes photographs in several spectral bands at the same time.
  • A typical multiband camera may use 4 to 9 lens, filter, and film combinations.
  • Multiband camera senses in the range 0.4 to 0.9 microns, covering visible light and near infrared.
