- A topographical map shows the surface of the earth in detail.
- A topographical map is also known as a Topographical Survey Sheet or topo-sheet.
2. Development of Topographical Maps in India
- The first attempt at mapping India was made by D'Anville in 1752.
- The Survey of India was established in 1767 when Major James Rennell was appointed the Surveyor General of Bengal.
- Rennell's famous Map of Hindoostan produced in 1788 marks the beginning of scientific mapping in India.
3. Major Map Series Published by Survey of India
- Southern Asia Series is drawn on a scale of 1:2,000,000 and covers 8 degrees latitude and 12 degrees longitude.
- India and Adjacent Countries Series is drawn on a scale of 1:1,000,000 and covers 4 degrees north to 40 degrees north and 44 degrees east to 104 degrees east.
- India and Adjacent Countries Series has 106 maps numbered 1 to 106.
4. Nomenclature and Numbering of Topographical Sheets
- Topographical sheets are based on the India and Adjacent Countries Series of 1:1,000,000.
- Quarter Inch or Degree Sheet is 1:250,000 and has an extent of 1 degree latitude by 1 degree longitude.
- A degree sheet is divided into 16 parts labelled A to P.
