Key Topics to Revise

1

Basic Concepts: Natural Vegetation, Flora, and Vegetation

  • Natural Vegetation is plant life that grows in the wild without human aid and adapts naturally to its environment.
  • Virgin Vegetation is the part of natural vegetation that has remained completely undisturbed by humans. In India, it is found only in remote parts of the Himalayas, Thar Desert, and the Sunderbans del
  • Flora refers to plants of a particular region listed by species – it is a list or catalogue of plant species.
2

Classification of Vegetation Types in India

  • Indian forests are classified into 6 types based on climate, soil, relief, and structure.
  • The 6 types are: (1) Tropical Evergreen Forests, (2) Tropical Deciduous/Monsoon Forests, (3) Tropical Dry Forests, (4) Arid Forests, (5) Delta/Tidal Forests, (6) Mountainous Forests.
  • Tropical Evergreen Forests: Rainfall above 200 cm, humidity above 70%, temperature around 24°C, tree height 45–60 metres.
3

Forest Cover in India

  • India should ideally have 33% of its geographical area under forests for ecological balance.
  • Currently, India has only 21.82% of its land area under forest cover (as per 2019–20 data).
  • Dense forests cover 11.48% and Open forests cover 7.76% of India's total land area.
4

Impact of Human Activity on Vegetation

  • India needs 33% forest cover for ecological balance but has only 21.82% – a major deficit.
  • Increasing population leads to greater demand for forest products, especially timber/wood.
  • Forests are cleared extensively for agriculture – a major cause of deforestation.
