The Peninsular Plateau – Geological History

  • The Peninsular Plateau is also called the Southern Plateau and is the oldest landform of India.
  • It is the Indian Plate – one of the several plates of the earth's crust.
  • During the Pre-Cambrian era, a block of crystal rocks emerged from a large depression and never submerged again.

The Himalayan Mountains – Formation and Plate Tectonic Theory

  • The Himalayas are Young Fold Mountains, much younger than the Peninsular Plateau.
  • Till the Mesozoic era (about 70 million years ago), the entire Himalayan area remained under the Tethys Sea – a geosyncline.
  • Angaraland was to the NORTH and Gondwanaland was to the SOUTH of the Tethys Sea.
