Rural-Urban Population
- India is primarily a country of villages – 68.84% of population lives in rural areas as per Census 2011.
- Urban population stands at 31.16% (377.11 million) as per Census 2011.
- India's urban population (377.1 million) is more than the total population of the USA (308.7 million).
Sex Composition and Sex Ratio
- Sex ratio is defined as the number of females per 1,000 males in the population.
- A sex ratio of 1,000 implies complete parity (equality) between the two sexes.
- Sex ratio above 1,000 means more females than males; below 1,000 means fewer females.
Age Composition and Age-Sex Pyramids
- Census of India classifies population into three broad age groups: Young (0–14 years), Adult (15–59 years), and Old (60 years and above).
- The adult age group (15–59 years) is called the 'working age group'.
- As per 2011 data: 0–14 years = 30.76%, 15–34 years = 34.85%, 35–59 years = 25.45%, 60 and above = 8.58%.
Literacy

- Census of India has adopted the UN definition of literacy.
- Since 1991 Census, children in the age group 0–6 years are treated as illiterate by definition.
