Overview of India's Relief Divisions
- India's total land area is distributed as: 10.7% mountainous (above 2,135 m), 18.6% hilly (305–2,135 m), 27.7% plateau (305–915 m), and 43% plains – as per Census Commission of India, 1951.
- India has five major relief divisions: Himalayan Mountain Complex, Indus-Ganga-Brahmaputra Plain, Peninsular Plateau, Coastal Plains, and Islands.
- The diversity of relief ranges from the world's youngest fold mountains (Himalayas) to one of the oldest plateaus (Peninsular Plateau).
The Himalayan Mountain Complex
- The Himalayas stretch from the Indus River in the west to the Brahmaputra River in the east – a distance of about 2,400 km.
- Average width ranges from 160 to 400 km.
- The Himalayas consist of THREE parallel ranges: Great Himalayas (Himadri), Lesser/Middle Himalayas, and Outer Himalayas (Shiwalik Range).
The Indus-Ganga-Brahmaputra Plain
- Extends for 2,400 km in east-west direction from Satluj to the Ganga delta, along the foot of the Himalayas.
- Width varies from 150–300 km; narrowest in Assam (90–100 km); 160 km near Rajmahal Hills; 280 km near Prayagraj.
- Formed by depositional work of Indus, Ganga, and Brahmaputra rivers and their tributaries.
The Peninsular Plateau
- Oldest and most stable landmass of India. Forms an irregular triangle with base between Delhi Ridge and Rajmahal Hills, apex at Kanniyakumari.
- General elevation: 600–900 metres. Dimensions: 1,600 km (N-S) × 1,400 km (E-W).
- Surrounded by hills: Aravalis, Vindhyachal, Rajmahal Hills (north); Eastern Ghats (east); Western Ghats (west).
