1. Signals, Circuits, and ICs

  • A signal in electronics is the variation of voltage or current with time.
  • Analogue signals vary continuously with time.
  • Digital signals have only two levels of voltage or current: 0 and a constant value such as 5 V.

2. Logic Gates and Boolean Algebra

  • Logic gates are digital circuits that work according to some logical relationship between input and output signals.
  • A logic gate has one output, but one or more inputs.
  • The output appears only for certain combinations of inputs.

3. OR Gate, AND Gate, and NOT Gate

  • OR gate has two or more inputs and one output.
  • In OR gate, the output is 1 when input A or input B or both are 1.
  • In OR gate circuit realisation, switches A and B are connected in parallel with a battery and a bulb.

  • NAND gate is a combination of AND and NOT gates.
  • The NAND output is the inverse of AND output.
  • NAND gate is a universal gate because it can perform all logic operations of OR gate, AND gate and NOT gate.
