- A plane area has both magnitude and direction, so it is represented by an area vector along the outward normal.
- Solid angle is the angle subtended by a surface at the centre of a sphere.

2. Gauss' Theorem and Gaussian Surface
- Gauss' theorem states that the net electric flux through any closed surface equals q/ε₀, where q is the net charge enclosed.
- The theorem is valid for a closed surface of any shape or size.
- For multiple charges inside the surface, total flux depends on the algebraic sum of enclosed charges.
3. Electric Field Due to Symmetric Charge Distributions
- For a point charge, spherical symmetry gives the field on a spherical Gaussian surface.
- For an infinite line charge, cylindrical symmetry gives a cylindrical Gaussian surface.
- For an infinite plane sheet of charge, a cylindrical surface with flat ends is used.
4. Important Comparisons and Sign Results
- For a closed surface, flux depends on enclosed charge and dielectric constant of the medium.
- A charge outside the surface gives zero net flux through the whole closed surface.
- A closed body without enclosed charge has zero total flux even in a non-uniform field.
