Key Topics to Revise

1

Magnetic Flux and Its Meaning

  • Magnetic flux through a plane perpendicular to a uniform magnetic field is equal to the product of magnetic field and area.
  • For a plane at an angle, flux depends on the component of magnetic field normal to the area.
  • Flux is positive if the outward normal is along the field and negative if it is opposite.
2

Faraday's Laws and Induced emf

  • Whenever the magnetic flux through a circuit changes, an emf is induced in the circuit.
  • If the circuit is closed, current flows; if it is open, emf is still induced but no current flows.
  • The first law gives the magnitude of induced emf as the negative rate of change of flux.
3

Ways of Changing Magnetic Flux and Motional emf

  • Magnetic flux can be changed by rotating the coil, changing the area, or changing magnetic field strength.
  • For a rotating coil, emf varies with angular velocity.
  • For changing magnetic field, emf depends on area and orientation.
4

Self-Induction and Energy Stored in an Inductor

  • Self-induction is the induced emf in the same coil when current through it changes.
  • The induced emf is called back emf because it opposes the change in current.
  • Self-inductance is the property that measures the ability of a coil to oppose change in current.
