Key Topics to Revise

1

1. Core idea of diffraction

 • Light travels approximately in straight lines when obstacles or apertures are large.
 • When the obstacle or aperture size becomes comparable to the wavelength, light bends round the corners and enters the geometrical shadow.
 • The intensity distribution on the screen due to an aperture is called the diffraction pattern.
2

2. Fraunhofer diffraction at a single slit

 • A narrow slit of width e is illuminated by monochromatic light normally.
 • A convex lens can focus the diffracted light on a screen placed in its focal plane.
 • Placing the source at the focus of a convex lens produces a plane wavefront and satisfies the Fraunhofer condition.
3

3. Important limiting cases and observations

 • When the slit is narrowed, the angle θ increases and the central maximum becomes wider.
 • If slit width e equals wavelength λ, the first minimum occurs at θ=90°, so the central maximum fills the whole space.
 • If the slit width is increased sufficiently, diffraction nearly vanishes and light propagates approximately rectilinearly.
4

4. Comparison with interference

 • Interference is due to superposition of light waves coming from two coherent sources.
 • Diffraction is due to interference of secondary wavelets coming from different points of the same wavefront.
 • Both interference and diffraction demonstrate the wave nature of light.
