What to Focus On

  • A symmetric figure has two identical halves.
  • Folding along the line of symmetry makes the halves coincide exactly.
  • The line is called a line of symmetry or an axis of symmetry.
  • Scalene triangle: no line of symmetry.
  • Isosceles triangle: one line of symmetry.
  • Equilateral triangle: three lines of symmetry.
  • Reflection creates a mirror image.
  • The mirror line is the perpendicular bisector of the segment joining a point and its image.
  • A figure and its reflection are congruent: same shape and size.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Every triangle has at least one line of symmetry.

An isosceles triangle has three lines of symmetry like an equilateral triangle.

Reflection in the x-axis changes x, and reflection in the y-axis changes y.
