2. Germs That Cause Disease

  • Diseases are caused by pathogens, which are disease-causing organisms.
  • The main pathogen groups here are bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and helminths.
  • Bacterial diseases in the syllabus are cholera, typhoid, and tuberculosis.

3. Bacterial Diseases

  • Cholera attacks the intestinal tract and is caused by Vibrio cholerae.
  • Cholera spreads through food and water by the faeco-oral route, aided by flies.
  • Cholera causes vomiting, loose motions, very little urination, and dehydration.

4. Protozoan Diseases

  • Malaria is caused by Plasmodium and is transmitted by the bite of the female Anopheles mosquito.
  • Plasmodium grows and multiplies in red blood cells and destroys them.
  • The incubation period of malaria is about three weeks.
