1. Meaning of Respiration

  • Respiration is a catabolic process of releasing energy from simple sugar glucose for carrying out life processes.
  • It is a breaking down process in which a living cell oxidises organic substances and releases carbon dioxide, water and energy.
  • Energy released in respiration is not only given out as heat; a large part is stored as ATP.

2. Steps of Respiration and the Role of ATP

  • The breakdown of glucose to carbon dioxide and water takes place in two major phases.
  • Glycolysis is the first major phase of respiration and occurs in the cytoplasm.
  • Glycolysis converts glucose to pyruvate.

3. Aerobic and Anaerobic Respiration

  • Aerobic respiration occurs in the presence of oxygen.
  • Aerobic respiration means complete oxidation of glucose to carbon dioxide and water.
  • Aerobic respiration is also called oxybiotic respiration.

4. Respiration in the Whole Plant

  • Every part of a plant respires, including leaves, stem, roots and even the deepest placed cells.
  • Plants obtain oxygen through three inlets: stomata in leaves, lenticels in stem and the general surface of roots.
  • Lenticels are small pores in woody stems that help in gas exchange.
