1. Structure of a Bisexual Flower

  • The flower is a specialized shoot.
  • The stalk of a flower is called the pedicel.
  • Some flowers do not have a stalk and are called sessile.

2. Complete, Incomplete, and Essential Parts

  • A complete flower contains all four floral structures.
  • If one or more sets of floral structures are missing, the flower is incomplete.
  • The essential parts of a flower are directly concerned with reproduction.

  • The calyx is the first whorl and is made of sepals.
  • Usually there are five sepals in the calyx.
