1. Functions of Skin

  • Skin accounts for 15% of an adult human's total body weight.
  • Skin is an almost impermeable barrier.
  • Skin protects the body in four main ways: it protects from mechanical shocks, prevents water loss, prevents entry of germs, and protects from ultraviolet rays.

2. Structure of Skin

  • The skin proper has two main layers: epidermis and dermis.
  • Epidermis is the outer thinner part of skin and is formed of stratified epithelium.
  • Epidermis has no blood vessels at all places.

3. Pigmentation and Abnormal Conditions

  • Melanin is the pigment in the cells of the malpighian layer that gives skin its colour.
  • Melanin also gives hair its colour.
  • Melanin acts like an umbrella and protects inner body parts from harmful ultraviolet rays.

4. Hair and Nails

  • A hair has three parts: shaft, root, and bulb.
  • The shaft projects from the skin.
  • The root is embedded in the dermis.
