12.1(a)The size of the atom in Thomson's model is ... the atomic size in Rutherford's model.Show solution

In Thomson's model, the positive charge is spread throughout the atom, so the atom's size is of atomic order. Rutherford's model says most mass and positive charge are concentrated in a tiny nucleus, so the atom is much larger than the nucleus. Therefore, the size of the atom in Thomson's model is much greater than the atomic size in Rutherford's model.

12.1(b)In the ground state of ... electrons are in stable equilibrium, while in ... electrons always experience a net force.Show solution

In Thomson's model, the positive charge is uniformly distributed and the electrons are embedded in it, so electrons can be in stable equilibrium. In Rutherford's model, electrons revolve around the nucleus and are continuously acted on by the attractive force, so they always experience a net force. Hence the blanks are Thomson's model and Rutherford's model.

12.1(c)A classical atom based on ... is doomed to collapse.Show solution

A classical atom based on Rutherford's model is doomed to collapse because the revolving electron should continuously radiate energy and spiral into the nucleus.

12.1(d)An atom has a nearly continuous mass distribution in a ... but has a highly non-uniform mass distribution in ...Show solution

In Thomson's model, mass is nearly continuously distributed throughout the atom. In Rutherford's model, most of the mass is concentrated in the tiny nucleus, so the mass distribution is highly non-uniform. Therefore the blanks are Thomson's model and Rutherford's model.

12.1(e)The positively charged part of the atom possesses most of the mass in ...Show solution

In Rutherford's model, the positively charged nucleus possesses most of the mass of the atom. So the correct choice is Rutherford's model.

12.2Suppose you are given a chance to repeat the alpha-particle scattering experiment using a thin sheet of solid hydrogen in place of the gold foil. (Hydrogen is a solid at temperatures below 14 K.) What results do you expect?Show solution

If a thin sheet of solid hydrogen is used instead of gold foil, the scattering would be much smaller. Hydrogen nuclei are very light and there is no large central charge like in gold to cause strong repulsion. So most $1particles would pass through with little or no deflection, and large-angle scattering or backscattering would be very rare. Compared with gold foil, the number of scintillations at large angles would be much less.

12.3A difference of 2.3 eV separates two energy levels in an atom. What is the frequency of radiation emitted when the atom make a transition from the upper level to the lower level?Show solution

Use hν=Eh\nu = E.

Given energy difference, E=2.3 eVE = 2.3\,\text{eV}.

Convert to joules:
E=2.3×1.6×10−19=3.68×10−19 JE = 2.3 \times 1.6\times 10^{-19} = 3.68\times 10^{-19}\,\text{J}

Now,
ν=Eh=3.68×10−196.6×10−34\nu = \frac{E}{h} = \frac{3.68\times 10^{-19}}{6.6\times 10^{-34}}
ν≈5.6×1014 Hz\nu \approx 5.6\times 10^{14}\,\text{Hz}
So the frequency is about 5.56×1014 Hz5.56\times 10^{14}\,\text{Hz}.
