Communicable diseases are diseases that spread from one person to another through touch, air, food, water, or sexual contact. They are also called infectious diseases.
Why are communicable diseases common in many places?
Answer
They are caused by germs and parasites present everywhere in air, water, and soil. When these germs enter the body, they multiply and disturb normal body functioning.
How do communicable diseases spread through food and water?
Answer
Uncovered food and unsafe water can become contaminated with germs. Dirty hands, dirty utensils, and flies can also transfer germs to food. Cholera, typhoid, hepatitis, and diarrhea spread this way.
Why is municipal tap water considered safe?
Answer
Municipal tap water is cleaned and treated to kill germs before it reaches homes. Drinking water should also be boiled for 10 minutes to make it free of germs.
What happens when a person with influenza coughs or sneezes in a crowded place?
Answer
Germs enter the air and can be breathed in by others. Air spread is more likely in crowded and poorly ventilated places, so communicable diseases can spread quickly there.
