1. Who is a Consumer?
- Every person who buys goods or uses services is a consumer.
- Guddi is an example of a consumer because she buys vegetables, pays a maid for services, and pays electricity and water charges.
- The Consumer Protection Act 1986 identifies two consumer categories: one who buys and uses any goods, and one who hires or avails of any service for personal use.
2. Major Problems Faced by Consumers
- Price variation happens when a shopkeeper charges more than the MRP.
- The printed price is the Maximum Retail Price, and it cannot be exceeded.
- MRP includes all taxes.
3. Standardisation Marks and Their Use
- Standard marks show that a product meets certain quality standards.
- ISI is used for electrical goods, chemicals, toys, pressure cookers, biscuits, coffee, and similar products.
- FPO is used for preserved foods such as tinned fruits and vegetables, juices, jams, sauces, and pickles.
4. Consumer Aids
- Consumer aids are materials that help a consumer select a product.
- Labels, leaflets, packages, advertisements, standardisation marks, legislation, and consumer organisations are consumer aids.
