  • Fertilisation happens when sperm from the man unites with the egg or ovum from the woman.
  • The fertilised ovum is called a zygote.
  • The zygote attaches to the uterus and begins to grow by drawing nutrition from the mother's body.

2. Trimester-wise Development of the Foetus

  • First trimester is 0 to 3 months.
  • In the first trimester, the fertilised egg divides repeatedly and attaches to the uterus.
  • The embryo’s life support systems include the amniotic sac, placenta, and umbilical cord.

3. Factors Affecting the Growing Foetus

  • The mother’s emotional state affects the foetus.
  • Tension, stress, anxiety, distress, fear, and grief can make the baby irritable after birth.
  • A happy and calm mother helps the baby develop better.

4. Medical Care and Safe Motherhood

  • After the first missed period, pregnancy can be checked by a urine test by a doctor.
  • Pregnant women should register at the nearest health centre or doctor as soon as possible.
  • In villages, help from an ASHA or Anganwadi Worker can be taken to reach the nearest health centre.
