1. Classification of Food Groups
- Food items are broadly divided into three groups based on function: energy giving, body building, and regulatory/protective.
- There is also a five food group system used for classification.
- Energy giving foods mainly include cereals, fats, and sugar.
2. Major Food Groups and Their Nutrients
- Cereals include rice, wheat, ragi, bajra, maize, jowar, barley, rice flakes, and wheat flour.
- All cereals give the same nutrients: carbohydrates, proteins, vitamin B, iron, and fibre.
- Cereals are the main source of energy because they are eaten in large quantity.
3. Food Exchange and Food Pyramid
- Food Exchange means substitution of one food item with another within the same food group so that the nutrients provided are approximately the same.
- Examples of food exchange include milk or milk products with cereals, or one fruit with another fruit from the same group.
- Guddi, Arul, and Sugna show food exchange because each breakfast includes a cereal with milk or a milk product.
4. Meal Planning and Family Needs
- Meal planning must consider age, sex, seasonal availability, weather, occupation, physiological needs, and family income.
- People eat according to age: babies, children, adolescents, adults, and old persons need different types and amounts of food.
- A man requires more protein and energy than a woman because his body is more muscular.
