  • Laundering consists of three steps: washing or dry-cleaning, finishing, and storing.
  • Washing removes dirt using soap or detergent and water.

3. Stains: meaning, identification, and removal

  • A stain is an unwanted mark of discolouration on a fabric caused due to contact with another substance.
  • Stains should be removed before washing because some stains become permanent when exposed to soaps, detergents, hot water, and ironing.
  • Stains can be identified by colour, smell, and feel.

4. Classification of stains and correct treatment

  • Vegetable stains are acidic in nature and require alkaline reagents such as borax.
  • Animal stains such as blood, milk, and egg contain protein and heat must be avoided.
  • Grease stains need grease absorbents and solvents like chalk and talcum powder before removing the colouring matter.
