  • An AP has a fixed difference between consecutive terms.
  • The standard form is a, a + d, a + 2d, a + 3d, ...
  • The common difference is found by subtracting consecutive terms.

  • The nth term gives any term of the AP directly.
  • The general term is useful when the term number is known.
  • The formula works for any positive integer n.

  • If a and one term are known, d can be found.
  • If d and one term are known, a can be found.
  • If two terms are known, form two equations using t_n = a + (n - 1)d.

4. Sum of First n Terms

  • The sum of an AP is found much faster by formula than by adding all terms one by one.
  • Gauss’s pairing method leads to the sum formula.
  • The formula can be written using a and d, or using the last term l, or using t_n.
