1. Natural Numbers, Whole Numbers, and Integers

  • Natural numbers are the counting numbers 1, 2, 3, ...
  • There is no greatest natural number.
  • Natural numbers are closed under addition and multiplication, but subtraction and division may not give a natural number.

  • A rational number is any number that can be written as p/q, where p and q are integers and q is not 0.
  • Every integer, whole number, and natural number is a rational number.
  • A rational number may be positive or negative depending on the signs of p and q.

  • Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division can be performed on rational numbers.
  • For same denominators, add or subtract numerators directly.

  • A terminating decimal ends after a finite number of decimal places.
