Key Topics to Revise

1

1. General Characteristics of Solids

  • Solids possess definite volume and definite shape, unlike gases and liquids
  • Atoms, ions, or molecules in solids are held by strong intermolecular forces
  • Constituent particles are arranged in fixed positions and can only oscillate about their mean positions
2

2. Classification of Solids: Crystalline vs. Amorphous

  • Crystalline solids have long-range orderly arrangement of constituents extending throughout the entire crystal
  • Amorphous solids have short-range, random arrangement of constituents (no definite structure)
  • Crystalline solids are anisotropic (properties vary with direction), while amorphous solids are isotropic (uniform properties in all directions)
3

3. Types of Crystalline Solids

  • Ionic solids: Composed of cations and anions held by strong electrostatic forces. Examples: NaCl, CaF₂, MgO
  • Covalent solids: Atoms bonded by covalent bonds in 3D network. Examples: Diamond, SiC, SiO₂. Very hard, high melting points
  • Molecular solids: Neutral molecules held by weak van der Waals forces. Examples: Ice, dry ice, naphthalene
4

4. Crystal Lattice and Unit Cell

  • Crystal lattice: Regular, 3D geometric arrangement of atoms/ions/molecules throughout the crystal
  • Unit cell: Smallest repeating structural unit that, when repeated in all directions, generates the entire crystal
  • Lattice constants (a, b, c): Edge lengths of the unit cell
