Key Topics to Revise
1
1. Adsorption and Absorption
- Adsorption is a SURFACE phenomenon where molecules concentrate at the interface between two phases
- Absorption is a BULK phenomenon where molecules are distributed throughout the adsorbent
- Adsorbent: material on which adsorption occurs (charcoal, silica gel, metals like Ni, Cu, Pt)
2
2. Classification of Adsorption
- PHYSICAL ADSORPTION (Physisorption/Van der Waals Adsorption):
- • Weak van der Waals forces (dipole-dipole, dispersion forces)
- • Heat of adsorption: ~4-40 kJ/mol (LOW)
3
3. Factors Affecting Adsorption
- SURFACE AREA OF ADSORBENT: Higher surface area → higher adsorption (directly proportional)
- • Powdered form more effective than bulk
- • Explains why finely divided catalysts are more effective
4
4. Applications of Adsorption
- GAS MASKS: Activated charcoal used in WWI and WWII—adsorbs toxic gases
- CREATING HIGH VACUUM: Activated charcoal used in vessels (Tail and Dewar method)
- DRYING OF GASES: Alumina, silica gel for drying CO₂, N₂, Cl₂, O₂, He; silica gel in blast furnaces
