2. Solar system and planet comparison
- The solar system has eight planets in this order from the Sun: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.
- Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars are small, rocky planets.
- Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are large planets, mostly made of gases.
3. Temperature, atmosphere, and the greenhouse effect
- Venus is the hottest planet not because it is closest to the Sun, but because its thick atmosphere traps heat.
- Venus has an atmosphere made mostly of carbon dioxide.
- The greenhouse effect on Venus stops heat from escaping.
4. Why Earth can support life
- Earth is at the right distance from the Sun for water to remain in liquid form.
- The range of distances from the Sun where water remains liquid is called the habitable zone or Goldilocks zone.
- Mars lies at the edge of the Sun's habitable zone.
