1. Spherical Mirrors

  • Mirrors whose reflecting surfaces are spherical are called spherical mirrors.
  • A concave mirror has a reflecting surface curved inwards.
  • A convex mirror has a reflecting surface curved outwards.

2. Images Formed by Mirrors

  • A plane mirror always forms an erect image of the same size as the object.
  • In a concave mirror, when the object is close, the image is erect and enlarged.
  • In a concave mirror, when the object moves farther away, the image becomes inverted and first enlarged, then diminished.

3. Uses of Concave and Convex Mirrors

  • Reflectors of torches and headlights of cars and scooters are concave in shape.
  • A dentist uses a concave mirror to get an enlarged view of teeth when held close.
  • Most modern telescopes are reflecting telescopes with a large concave mirror as the main mirror.

4. Laws of Reflection

  • The ray of light falling on a mirror is called the incident ray.
  • The ray that comes back from the mirror is called the reflected ray.
  • The normal is a line making 90° to the mirror surface at the point of incidence.
